Bluebox reveals Android security hole, may affect 99 percent of devices

Bluebox reveals Android security vulnerability, supposedly affects up to 99 percent of devices
Researchers at Bluebox Security have revealed a disturbing flaw in Android's security model, which the group claims may affect up to 99 percent of Android devices in existence. According to Bluebox, this vulnerability has existed since Android 1.6 (Donut), which gives malicious app developers the ability to modify the code of a legitimate APK, all without breaking its cryptographic signature -- thereby allowing the installation to go unnoticed. To pull off the exploit, a rotten app developer would first need to trick an unknowing user into installing the malicious update, but hackers could theoretically gain full control of a user's phone if the "update" posed as a system file from the manufacturer.

Bluebox claims that it notified Google of the exploit in February. According to CIO, Bluebox CTO Jeff Forristal has named the Galaxy S 4 as the only device that's currently immune to the exploit -- which suggests that a security patch may already exist. Forristal further claims that Google is working on an update for its Nexus devices. In response to our inquiry, Google told us that it currently has no comment. We certainly hope that device manufacturers do the responsible thing and distribute timely security patches to resolve this issue. Absent that, you can protect yourself by installing updates through the Play Store and Android's built-in system update utility.

Mobile security startup Bluebox Security has unearthed a vulnerability in Android’s security model which it says means that the nearly 900 million Android phones released in the past four years could be exploited, or some 99% of Android devices. The vulnerability has apparently been around since Android v1.6 (Donut), and was disclosed by the firm to Google back in February. The Samsung Galaxy S4 has already apparently been patched.

It’s likely that Google is working on a patch for the vulnerability. We’ve reached out to the company for comment and will update this story with any response.

Bluebox intends to detail the flaw at the Black Hat USA conference at the end of this month but in the meanwhile it’s written a blog delving into some detail. The vulnerability apparently allows a hacker to turn a legitimate app into a malicious Trojan by modifying APK code without breaking the app’s cryptographic signature. Bluebox says the flaw exploits discrepancies in how Android apps are cryptographically verified and installed. Specifically it allows a hacker to change an app’s code, leaving its cryptographic signature unchanged — thereby tricking Android into believing the app itself is unchanged, and allowing the hacker to wreak their merry havoc.

The flaw is made worse if an attacker targets a sub-set of apps developed by device makers themselves, or third parties — such as Cisco with its AnyConnect VPN app — that work closely with device makers and are granted system UID access. This sub-set of apps can allow a hacker to tap into far more than just mere app data, with the potential to steal passwords and account info and take over the normal running of the phone. Here’s how Bluebox explains it:
Installation of a Trojan application from the device manufacturer can grant the application full access to Android system and all applications (and their data) currently installed. The application then not only has the ability to read arbitrary application data on the device (email, SMS messages, documents, etc.), retrieve all stored account & service passwords, it can essentially take over the normal functioning of the phone and control any function thereof (make arbitrary phone calls, send arbitrary SMS messages, turn on the camera, and record calls). Finally, and most unsettling, is the potential for a hacker to take advantage of the always-on, always-connected, and always-moving (therefore hard-to-detect) nature of these “zombie” mobile devices to create a botnet.
While 99% of Android phones being technically vulnerable to app hackers is a tough stat to ignore, it’s worth emphasising that just because such a flaw (apparently) exists it doesn’t mean it has or will be widely exploited — especially as, in this instance, it has been flagged to Google prior to being made public. And Google is presumably hard at work on a fix.
That said, the nature of the Android ecosystem does slow down the patching process. On the fix front, Bluebox notes that it will be up to device manufacturers to “produce and release firmware updates for mobile devices (and furthermore for users to install these updates)”, adding: “The availability of these updates will widely vary depending upon the manufacturer and model in question.”
Getting timely OS updates has always been a problem for Android users (Nexus owners are the exception), owing to Android’s openness necessarily encouraging variation and fragmentation within the ecosystem, with different manufacturer skins and carrier additions all standing in the way and delaying updates. That likely means the window of risk attached to this latest Android vulnerability takes longer to close for the majority of users than many would be comfortable with.
In the meantime, Bluebox advises the following:
  • Device owners should be extra cautious in identifying the publisher of the app they want to download.
  • Enterprises with BYOD implementations should use this news to prompt all users to update their devices, and to highlight the importance of keeping their devices updated.
  • IT should see this vulnerability as another driver to move beyond just device management to focus on deep device integrity checking and securing corporate data.
Android is often linked with malware

not because there’s a high actual risk of users being infected with malware but because, in relative terms, it’s the biggest target for mobile malware writers, being as it’s the dominant mobile OS. It’s also not as locked down as some other mobile platforms, making it an easier target for hackers. Yet its worth stressing that mobile malware remains a very marginal risk, even for Android users, and especially if you’re a mainstream user getting your apps from the likes of Google Play, rather than alternative third-party app stores or routes.
This latest Android security flaw adds to the general low-level risk attached to using Android but how widely it ends up being exploited by malware writers remains to be seen — so how much more actual risk it introduces into the ecosystem is hard to quantify.
Update: According to a report in CIO, Google has already modified its Play Store’s app entry process so that apps that have been modified using this exploit are blocked and can no longer be distributed via Play.

Simple Way of Pumping Gas into your Vehicle with EzPump

Simple Way of Pumping Gas into your Vehicle with EzPump

Some of the most basic things in our life always remain the same even though they are confusing and unproductive. But, since that’s the way we have always been doing things, we don’t bother much to change our working or even the thinking. One of such things in filling gas in our cars, it is time-wasting task, and leads to fuel waste, or even spoil our hands.

1 EzPump

However, all that is set to change with a concept called EzPump. Simply put, it is a small and simple accessory which is used along with the pump handle to fill the fuel in the car. The nozzle trigger can be locked with the Ezpump to ensure that it is adding the gas to the car.

Benefits

Clean Hands

As the gas can be directly filled with the use of EzPump, user’s hand is free from using the pump handle and thus there are no chances of getting it dirty.

Avoids wastage

When the gas is filled with oneself, there are always chances of overfilling the tank, but the problem goes away with EzPump. It is positioned in such a manner that the gas fills to the sufficient level only.

Pump it itself

This is the biggest advantage of this concept. With its use, users does not need to carry the pump since it does it automatically makes it easy to insert it directly to the tank’s entrance. EzPump, also pumps the gas itself without requiring any action from user.

How to back it?

Currently, the project EzPump is looking to expand to other markets and for which, it wants to raise money. The project is hoping to get a crowd-funding of 300 Canadian US Dollars and also offers discounts to early buyers.

Google kills Android privacy control feature

Google kills Android privacy control feature

SAN FRANCISCO: Google has taken an untested privacy characteristic from its Android mobile softwares that had allowed users to block apps from assembling personal data such as address publication data and a user’s location.

The change means that owners of Smartphones using Android 4.4.2, the newest version of the world’s most well liked operating scheme for mobile devices issued this week, must provide get access to their individual data in alignment to use certain apps.
A business spokesman said the characteristic had been included by misfortune in Android 4.3, the version issued last summer.

‘We are suspicious of this explanation, and do not think that it in any way supports removing the feature rather than advancing it,’ said Peter Eckersley, expertise projects director at the electrical devices opportunity base. The digital rights website first publicized the change in a blog post on Friday.

Android users who wish to keep the privacy controls by not upgrading to Android 4.4.2 could be susceptible to security dangers, Eckersley said. “As of now, users must select between the privacy or security on the Android gadgets, but not two of them.”

A lot of 3rd party apps for Android gadgets, like  music-identifying service Shazam and well liked Smartphone flashlight apps, need get access to individual information that does not always have an conspicuous attachment to the app’s functionality, such as telephone call data and location facts and figures.
Eckersley informed that The privacy feature permitted users to choose and choose which personal facts and figures a third-party app can collect. Users must install special Apps Ops Launcher softwares, which was created by another business, in alignment to get access to the hidden privacy controls.

Android softwares was loaded on 81percent of all Smartphones transported worldwide in the third quarter, according to business research company IDC. Apple’s iOS, the software used on the iPhone, possess 12.9 % market share.

Privacy has become an increasingly significant issue as Smartphones, which are laden with consumers’ personal data, become the primary computing gadgets for numerous consumers. In November, Google acquiesced to pay a $17 million fine to resolve allegations that it secretly followed world wide web users by putting special digital documents on the world wide world wide web browsers of their Smartphones.

Will Google Glass prescription frames catch on?

Google Glass prescription frames
The world is still waiting to see what Google really plans to do with Google Glass. We have heard of augmented reality, gamification, among others, but will it fit the lifestyle of techie-end users? A peek into what the wearable technology might look like integrated with a regular pair of glasses was posted online by Brian Matiash, an employee of the search engine giant. The images were soon removed but not soon enough.

Google Glass prescription frames
Matiash works as the community manager of Google+ Photos. Based on the images posted by the Syracuse University master's degree holder, the Google Glass seem to have a slot where users can fit the temple of their prescription glasses. How the high-tech gadget will be secured to the traditional frame is not yet clear.
According to a report on tech blog Phandroid, which was among the first to scoop the story, "Glass will need to be made specifically for Glass, with one side attaching to the main unit. This means if you were hoping to bring your current favorite pair of eyeglasses with you, they likely wont have a proper Glass fitment."
Another possibility will be to have a custom frame coming with the Glass but this will require certain adjustments to properly fit the user. A more practical option will be a snap-on design. There are also speculations that a screw can be used to attached a regular pair of eyeglasses to the wearable technology device.
The leaked images surfaced amid news that invitations were sent by Google to Explorers so they can swap their old version for the updated one.
Google has not commented or issued a statement about the images that appeared on the social media profile of one of their employees.

Do you think the Google Glass prescription frames will catch on? Sound off below.

What Is Jailbreaking On Iphone And Ipad?

Jailbreaking:A group of hackers worked out a hacking system, allowing users to get root access to iphone and ipad and use these devices with diverse functionalities by breaking restrictions imposed by company.

What it does?

When these devices are jailbroken, the application named"CYDIA"
gets its place appeared in these devices.Cydia comes with some installed packages, which specifically originate from a repository BigBoss. Now these installed packages include, themes, tweaks, hacks, utilities and much more, providing users full access and control to their devices, allowing them to use it in their own way!

Advantages:

1.Root access to device
2.Control every action perfromed in your device.
3.theming options which apple devices lack!
4.Tweak devices in versatile ways.
5.Get paid contents in appstore free on jailbreak stores.
6.access in game and app control using hacks.

Disadvantages:

1.when jailbroken,a few apps might suffer  crash problems and and may even completely be out of order, these mentioned problems are 1 in 100.
2.the main issue caused bY jailbreaking is slowness in processor's speed, but this problem occurs when user outpasses in having tweaks, hacks and utilities.if someone deliberately selects few tweaks, hacks and utilities and makes himself a fittest user then these chances are rarest.
3.a very big issue reported by many users is,hanging of their devices while using some hacked apps and they have to restart their devices.the answer to this question is somewhat funny! While procuring something , you are supposed to lose a part of that something?

Available jailbreaks:

every apple user is familiar with the fact that apple has released ios7 and those who upgraded should have been familiar with the fact that they are going to lose jailbreak.those who did not upgrade are also aware that jailbreak is available for ios 6.1.3 and are enjoying.all older versions of ios are also jailbreakable.

When ios 7 jailbreak will be released?

This question has been head scratching and nail biting for all those upgraded to ios 7.
Recently a group of hackers 'Ragebreak' has worked out a jailbreak utility supporting ios7 for iphone 4 only.there are two problems with this utility.
1.(minor)this utility is not created by MAIN group of hackers named "evad3ers",but this no longer remains a problem if worked briliantly.
2.(major)what if someone is jailbroken ios7 on iphone 4,he will not enjoy the real status of jailbreak as many tweaks and utliliies are not supported with ios 7 rather retain their previous status for ios 6.

Jailbreak on devices next to iphone 4 is not available uptill now.it should be remembered that a jailbreak for ios6 was made available after 5 months of wait!

Many recent tweets from evad3ers suggest that a jailbreak will be made available sooner or later,as they have passed security changes barrier for ios7.
Evad3ers have also confirmed that all present version of ios7 including bete 7.1 are safe to update.

Samsung Planning for 560ppi Amoled Display For 2014

According to reports from OLED.at, Samsung is working on AMOLED displays with 560ppi for screens as small as five inches. Potentially next year’s handsets from the company could offer higher resolutions and more pixels per inch that what is currently available.

If this report is correct then we could see resolutions at 2560 x 1440. Although no specific model has been linked with this news, it would be a great selling point for the Galaxy S5, which is rumoured to be launched early in 2014.

So why the hype? Well to put it into perspective, the current 5-inch Samsung Galaxy S4 flagship handset has AMOLED but only 441ppi with a 1920 x 1080 resolution. The iPhone 5S has an LCD display, with 326ppi and 640 x 1136 pixels.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Screen
If Samsung do indeed release a handset with 556ppi, it would have 230 more pixels per inch than Apple’s current offering.

Of course the average user is unlikely to see the additional pixels in each inch of the screen but this could be a powerful marketing tool for Samsung.

Do Not Track Kids Act Introduced in US

Is it morally right to track and analyse the internet history of children under 16 years of age?  An American bill called the Do Not Track Kids Act of 2013 is planning to protect children under the age of 16.  It will extend federal anti-tracking protections under the Children’s Online Protection Act (COPPA).  The bill will allow teens and parents to delete any personal public information when “technologically feasible.”
The Do Not Track Kids Act was introduced this week by Senator Ed Markey and Rep. Joe Barton.   If passed, internet companies will need parental permission before using personal information of under 16s.  They will also have to legitimise how their private data is collected and used.

“We must not allow the era of big data to become a big danger for children on the Internet in the 21st century,” Markey replied in a statement. “It is time for Congress to take action to ensure that children and teens are fully protected when they go online and parents have the tools they need to protect their kids.”
After the bipartisan bill was introduced, Facebook changed its private policy to take out a line that critics feel gave the social network the freedom to collect the personal data of children. However, Facebook denies this idea and says it removed this line to help avoid misinterpretation.  “This language was about getting a conversation started,” Facebook responded. “We were not seeking and would not have gained any additional rights as a result of this addition. We received feedback, though, that the language was confusing and so we removed the sentence.”

In a follow-up statement, Markey continued to claim that Facebook posed a threat to children’s privacy.  Facebook pushes teens and children to release sensitive, personal information on a worldwide, public information highway.  This, in itself, is enough to push congress to create strong protection for the privacy of their vulnerable citizens.

On the other hand, changes to Facebook’s privacy policy do include explanations that show how users personal information may be used in advertisements.  The question is, do children under 16 concern themselves about these explanations?

Viber 4.0 Adds Stickers, Push to Talk & Android Tablet Support

Viber 4.0 has just hit app stores!  The updated app carries new features such as; Stickers, push-to-talk voice messaging, and it also has support for Android tablets.

CEO Talmon Marco recently said, “This is the most exciting release we’ve had for Viber since we launched the platform…Today’s updated version brings a vast new range of features and functionality to Viber.”
On top of the list of the new features is the push-to-talk instant communication option, which allows users to send short voice messages to each other. The app creators are very happy with this new feature as it simplifies the typical PTT process.  The old process involves the user recording a message before sending it and then waiting for the recipient to download it and listen. Using this new feature however, Viber users can cut the average 60-second response time to approx five seconds.

Viber 4.0

For fun, the updated app also comes with a new Sticker Market, where users can find a large selection of cartoon images to express their emotions. Viber has unveiled two new featured characters, Mayo and Blu, as well as exclusive content to tie in with annual themes and holidays. Users can choose from more than 300 stickers priced at $1.99.
Android users can take advantage of the updates by downloading the Viber app on their tablet. It works in the same way as the desktop application.  The app carries over mobile contacts and synchronizes messages and calls on all the users’ devices.
For those running Android 4.0 and up, they will have access to improved notifications, the ability to send messages while on a call and a Light up Screen setting for incoming messages!  “Viber has always aimed to provide a complete communications experience,” Marco said. “With the new features we’ve brought to the platform, Viber lets users connect and stay connected in more ways than ever.”

Chrome 31 Browser Released

The time has come round once again for Google to release its latest Chrome Web browser.  The new Chrome Stable browser is known officially as Version 31.0.1650.48 and it is available for free to download for Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame, according to a recent post by Anthony Laforge of the Google Chrome team, on the Google Chrome Releases Blog. The 31′st Version of Google’s Chrome web browser has been officially released with a number of fixes and user improvements.

Google Chrome 31

A total of 25 security fixes are included in the latest version, wrote Laforge.  These fixes address a wide variety of issues in the browser’s code. Also included is a Flash Player update to Version 11.9.900.152.  Now that this latest Stable version of Chrome has been released for users, Google continues to labour on the next beta release, Version 32.
One new feature being introduced into Version 32 beta is the ability for users to quickly get a warning on their browser tabs when there is a page that is producing disruptive sounds via a video clip or other content, according to a post by a Google software engineer, Yuri Wiitala, on the Google Chrome Blog.  “Have you ever shuffled through your tabs to figure out where that sound or music is coming from?” wrote Wiitala. “We hear you! With today’s latest Chrome Beta release, you can now visually scan your tabs for a speaker icon to quickly find the offender.

Chrome will also indicate which tabs are currently using your Webcam or are being cast to your TV.” The alert will display a small icon on the affected browser tab to let users know which tab is playing the unwanted sound at that moment, wrote Wiitala. The sound alert is also activated for Webcam sounds and Webcasting volumes
.
Also of note in the beta 32 release is a new feature for Windows 8 users that allows better management of multiple Chrome windows at the same time, while accessing Chrome apps using an integrated app launcher, wrote Wiitala. Additionally, the latest beta 32 version includes a Safe Browsing alert that pops up to warn users before they are about to or download a malicious files visit a suspect Website.  The latest beta version now includes automatic blocking of malware files, according to Wiitala.

The beta Version 32, officially known as Version 32.0.1700.6 for Windows, Mac and Linux, also includes a number of new extension APIs and apps as well as a host of fixes and aimed at increasing performance and stability, according to a post by Karen Grünberg, a member of the Google Chrome team, on the Chrome Releases Blog.  As part of the introduction of Stable Version 31 and the beta Version 32 of Chrome, Google has introduced the latest Developer channel edition of Chrome, which is Version 33. By working on multiple browser versions simultaneously, the next versions are in the pipeline for future stable releases.

Snapchat Refuses Facebook’s $3 Billion Offer

Latest reports say that the owners of the ever so popular photo messaging service Snapchat, have refused an acquisition offer from the social media giant Facebook.  This offer would no doubt have turned Evan Spiegel and his colleagues into extremely wealthy people.

According to the Wall Street Journal, which cited sources close to the company, the social network has offered approximately $3 billion to purchase Snapchat, that is more than double the amount Yahoo paid for Tumblr earlier this year.  Facebook are not the only interested party in this matter as several other companies want to either acquire or invest in the service. For example, China’s Tencent Holdings, the owner of WeChat, proposed to lead a funding round that would value Snapchat at $4 billion.

Snapchat Refuses Facebook's $3 Billion Offer
Snapchat was developed back in 2011 by a group of Stanford University students.  The service allows users to take photos and record videos that will be deleted several seconds after they have been viewed by the recipient.  The company currently produces no revenue, but it has attracted a huge member base, and is especially popular among teenagers and this is the bait; the group of young teenagers with what seems like a limitless amount of cash to spend, which advertisers are willing to pay high stakes for. Only a few months ago, in July, a report in New Statesman valued Snapchat at $860 million.

One of the main reasons for the swift climb of the Snapchat service, appears to be ‘sexting’, this is a practice of sending and receiving sexually explicit images that more than often involve varying degrees of nudity.  This is, unfortunately, especially widespread among younger users of Snapchat. Developers, however, insist that the functionality of the service has not been adapted to enable or encourage sexting?
In the short space of time from July until now, Facebook has offered the founders $3 billion in cash, if successful; this would be the social network’s leading acquisition by a long stretch, almost tripling the amount it paid for Instagram last year.

But according to the sources, the 23-year-old CEO, Evan Spiegel, is trying to hold off on any strategic moves until early next year, hoping that the user base of the company will keep growing, thereby increasing its worth.  Rumour has it that Facebook had already approached Snapchat previous to this deal, offering around $1 billion for the messaging service, although Snapchat has not issued any comments on the report.
Unprofitable but popular messaging and social services with strong mobile support, have become a key target for investment in the last year. Last week’s Twitter IPO has valued the company at more than £11 billion, while Pinterest’s recent financing round had amplified its value to approximately £2.4 billion.

Dual-Screen YotaPhone To Launch WorldWide In December

A little less than a year ago, I caught wind of an interesting concept called the YotaPhone. While I did call it the phone for (potentially) indecisive individuals, I cannot deny the allure of having two mobile phone screens to work with. After all, the mobile phone serves so many purposes that sometimes, you do not need to use the high-def high-resolution screen. And with the option of having a low-power screen, YotaPhone opens up worlds of possibilities, especially in terms of power consumption.

yotaphone

Guess what? We just might be able to get our hands on it come December!

The YotaPhone has been in the works for longer than a year, and Russian company Yota Devices has not been ultra secretive about its baby. In fact, they have not been shy to send out teasers to the general public. The release of the actual product is another story altogether.

With Yota Devices’s “official” confirmation to TechCrunch, though, it seems that the dual-screen phone will actually get to market.

In spite of the long wait that consumers already have had to deal with, there are still many details that we don’t know about the YotaPhone. What we do know:

  • a dual-core 1.7GHz chipset

  • 2GB of RAM

  • a 4.3-inch 720p screen upfront

  • a 1800mAh battery

Looking at those specs, one might wonder whether the YotaPhone can actually survive in the phone-eat-phone world out there. Then again, there is the secondary e-Ink screen that practically serves as the carrot at the end of the stick. Will it be enough to lure consumers to drop Samsung, Apple, and the other major players?

As for the price – your guess is as good as mine. Here’s one of those teaser videos to whet your appetite even more.

If you want to be one of the first people to use the YotaPhone, make sure you fill out the pre-order form without delay.

25 of the best Apps for Android

Google-IO-2013 Google Play logo 91600 aa

Android is an amazing OS. There are dozens of Android phones to choose from, there are over a million apps in the Google Play Store, and using these elements, you can have your phone how you want it. It’s extremely difficult to concoct a list of the best Android apps out there because everyone’s wants, needs, and preferences are different. That said, there are just some apps that are so good that they fit nearly everyone’s preferences. You may notice a lack of games and that’s because we’re giving them their own list. You may also notice a lack of messenger service and social networking apps because people don’t choose services based on the available apps, they choose services based on how much they like the service regardless of the quality of the app.
